Following the resolution of a naming contest with 138 submissions this week, supercomputer Hippu is ready to spur research and empower companies in the Finnish region of South Savo to explore data-driven business models.
The supercomputer is part of the Memory Lab digital technology research and innovation environment that will bring world-class data processing and analytics capabilities to the Memory Campus in the Kalevankangas district of the city of Mikkeli.
Memory Lab is developed by Digitalia, a joint research center of the South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (Xamk), the University of Helsinki, and the National Library of Finland.
The word ‘hippu’ translates to ‘nugget’ and is often associated with gold nuggets. Eija Warjus, who submitted the winning name, said: “A ‘hippu’ is a valuable find for its discoverer. With a supercomputer, we can mine such valuable nuggets. The name furthermore alludes to the golden front panel of a computing unit.”
“The name ‘Hippu’ succinctly captures the essence of research, development, and innovation activities in the Memory Lab: we gather a lot of data into a gold pan, and with the substantial capacity of the supercomputer, we extract essential and applicable knowledge,” Digitalia’s Research Director Stina Westman added. “At the same time, Hippu is an approachable name for modern artificial intelligence infrastructure."
Investments in infrastructure and competence development in Memory Lab through various development projects is expected to amount to several millions of euros. These aim at accelerating new, data-driven business operations in South Savo, and to attract companies and individuals to take advantage of new work, study, research and entrepreneurial opportunities.
The high-performance computing capabilities will enable companies in the region to experiment with the possibilities of artificial intelligence for data mining, processing, refinement, and retrieval.
Memory Lab serves businesses and other organisations in the Mikkeli area and beyond. It is already host to so-called memory organisations such as the National Archives of Finland, the National Library of Finland, the Muisti Centre of War and Peace, and the Central Archives for Finnish Business Records (Elka).
The performance of Memory Lab’s supercomputer will be equivalent to up to 20,000 laptops or 3,000 servers , enabling the kind of parallel computing power required for AI processing of large amounts of data. Various parts of equipment have been obtained from project partners Nvidia, Fujitsu and NetApp through Atea, with high-speed fibre connections provided by MPY.
The ‘Memory Lab Investments’ -project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the South Savo Regional Council.
As part of the ‘Memory Lab as a Driver of Digital Experimentation and Innovation Culture in South Savo’-project, funded by the South Savo Regional Council, already a dozen companies have signed up to power their business operations with AI capabilities. They will be the first to pilot the Memory Lab supercomputer.
In the meantime, the project ‘Resilience and innovation capability with open-source competence (Open Memory Lab)’ aims to strengthen the capacity for change and innovation within organisations in South Savo by providing guidance, training and peer learning opportunities related to the utilisation of open-source tools, technologies and business models. The intended outcome is the Open Memory Lab, a competence hub for open-source expertise.

KOUVOLA, Finland, August 18, 2023. - A prototype of a 5G Mokki Tech Space cottage optimised for indoor environments was unveiled at the Kouvola campus of the South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (Xamk) on Thursday.
In a style that agrees with functional, modern, Nordic interior design, the ecologically sourced birch plywood structure, finished with cotton-linen textiles, bursts with fifth-generation mobile information and communication technology.
The module and its accessories were created by three students and an alumnus of Xamk. Design and manufacturing: Antti Hevosmaa and Antti-Oskari Sinkkonen (alumnus). Electricity and wiring: Joni Fagerlund. Curtains: Ellanoora Valve.
In a streak of user-centric design, the surrounding curtains gently guide people immersed in a virtual reality experience to stay within the physical parameters of their metaverse.
The 5G Mokki is a modular high-tech unit for developing software applications that require ultra-fast internet connections, to render immersive, three-dimensional (3D), virtual-reality (VR) and augmented-reality (AR) learning environments, as well as to deliver innovation services and remote work from and to any location in the world.
The 5G Mokki Tech Spaces feature 5G/6G technology courses. Content developers include Aalto University, University of Helsinki, University of Oulu, University of Tampere, Nokia, Ericsson, Ernst & Young, and Accenture.
As one of eight international development pilot projects sponsored by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture, EDUCase brings together 26 Finnish higher-education institutions with academic and societal partners in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia to promote collaboration for sustainability in higher education and innovation.
Through partnerships on the EDUCase Platform and other international university networks, the educational and research content will expand to a wide variety of themes.
One area of focus is the stimulation of entrepreneurship through business courses and mentoring, while the interconnected cottages can serve as a development platform for next-generation software-intensive startups.
At the same time, the tech spaces can provide the technical infrastructure to stimulate remote work. For example, through virtual and augmented reality applications, African knowledge workers could work remotely for European companies with overlapping time zones.
In the spring of 2023, EDUCase’s 5G Seasonal School involved the African School of Economics in Nigeria, Benin and Ivory Coast; Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia; and Lusaka University in Zambia.
Following a visit by a delegation of the EDUCase Platform to Nigeria in April 2023, the Nigerian agency responsible for the country’s university infrastructure, TETFund, expressed interest in creating a network of connected 5G Mokki Tech Spaces to enable new types of trans-continental studies combining technology and business.
Starting with a core of six university campuses, each representing one of Nigeria’s six geopolitical regions, the intention is to subsequently expand the network to cover 49 university campuses. As a result, the 5G Mokki Tech Spaces will be able to provide access to the latest mobile ITC technologies to up to five million students and recent graduates.
The project will be planned and implemented in collaboration with Cognity Advisory, a well-known African consultancy network, and the Start North Mokki Tech Space network administered by Start North association and its Mökki Solutions Oy Ab impact company.
Start North is an association that serves as an accelerator network, consisting of world-leading universities, companies, and not-for-profit organisations, including Ambitious Africa, an initiative bringing African and Nordic youth together to take Africa to the next level.
The true potential of 5G/6G-enabled modular infrastructure lies in enabling entirely new categories of applications. Think remote control of drones, self-driving cars and complex industrial processes. Think remote surgery. Think remote work and meetings in virtual or augmented reality. Think remote learning. The operative word is "remote".

Following a visit by a delegation of the EDUCase network to Nigeria in April 2023, the agency responsible for the country’s university infrastructure, TETFund, has expressed interest in creating a network of connected 5G Mokki Tech Spaces. The tech spaces enable new types of trans-continental studies combining technology and business.
Starting with a core of six university campuses, each representing one of Nigeria’s six geopolitical regions, the intention is to subsequently expand the network to cover 49 university campuses. As a result, the 5G Mokki Tech Spaces can provide access to the latest mobile ITC technologies to up to five million students and recent graduates.
Since many European and African countries have overlapping time zones, The 5G Mokkis provide an opportunity for international corporations to tap into highly skilled, young African talent, not only to deliver remote work but also to spur innovation.
13:00 Opening and welcome - Dr. Petteri Ikonen, Xamk.

5G Mökki is Changing the World | Aalto University, October 29, 2021. https://www.aalto.fi/en/news/5g-mokki-is-changing-the-world
QOCO Systems Oy is an ICT supplier company in the aviation industry. Risk management, standards and regulations are a key part of business operations in the aviation industry, says Laura Auhto-Savolainen, who is responsible for QOCO Systems’ management system based on ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 standards. She is one of the main users of their Risk Portfolio and was defining the tool for the company’s use.
Like many other companies, QOCO Systems also had challenges with risk management requirements in the past. Risks must be managed in sufficient detail and easily. Links between risks must be made visible, as well as measures resulting from risks and their management. In addition to individual risks, it should be possible to look at the overall picture of all risks, and information should be easily found. A solution to these challenges was found in Thinking Portfolio’s Risk Portfolio.
QOCO Systems previously implemented Thinking Portfolio’s Project Portfolio (Read article: “Thinking Portfolio’s straightforwardness convinced software house QOCO Systems”). At Thinking Portfolio’s user day, they heard presentations about the use of Risk Portfolios, and the idea of acquiring a second portfolio matured.
Laura said that the implementation of the Project Portfolio went smoothly, so they started the implementation project of the second portfolio with confidence, as people and the methods of operation were already familiar.
“Building a good relationship helps the work of both parties”
Laura says that she particularly appreciates that Thinking Portfolio’s consultants presented the demo environment of the portfolio and told what kind of solutions have been built for other similar portfolios. They wanted to use this information as much as possible, even though there were clear wishes about certain things. In her opinion, the ease of implementation is one of the main advantages of the portfolio.
“There has been nothing bad to say. All our wishes were handled smoothly. We were surprised how quickly all the changes we wished for were made! Just when we sent a message about new needs, a comment already came that this has been taken care of. Building a good relationship helps the work of both parties”, Laura says.
Risk Portfolio has received positive feedback immediately after its implementation and it has been seen to meet the needs of QOCO Systems well. According to Laura, one of the best aspects of the portfolio is that its’ use is intuitive and easy to learn.
“The portfolio contains overviews and reports that provide an overall picture from different perspectives and yet allow for a very detailed analysis of individual risks. It is definitely a plus of your software that the overview is similar to any table, and it is easy to understand what it is about.”
In the portfolio, it can be defined where in the company and business a single risk is linked to and how the risks are linked to each other. Laura also believes that the portfolio is a very effective tool from the point of view of ISO quality and information security standards and auditing. It is easy to show the auditor information, updates, situation reviews and changes related to risk management by running necessary reports from the portfolio.
“The portfolio contains overviews and reports that provide an overall picture from different perspectives and yet allow for a very detailed analysis of individual risks.”
“Risk Portfolio has comprehensive reporting and information can be easily obtained from different perspectives. Therefore, it is easy to use the information in business and, for example, in audits. The use activity of the portfolio is increased by the fact that risks, projects, and resource management can all be found in one place, and everything looks the same. Then it is easy to link things together.”
In the near future, QOCO Systems will focus on making the use of Risk Portfolio a continuous activity so that risks will be reviewed and updated in the tool.
A longer-term goal is to expand the use and reporting of the portfolio for example for ISO certificates and continuous reporting. Laura says that the goal is to use Risk Portfolio more widely for product-specific risk assessments and to have project risks combined with business risks.
At QOCO Systems, they are sensitive to trying new functionalities in the portfolio. Laura says that she is already looking forward to next year’s Thinking Portfolio user day, where she will again hear about new functionalities and ways to develop portfolios.
“QOCO helps the aviation industry thrive in a changing world by creating new ways to work, communicate and use data. We have been a trusted partner to airlines, MROs and aerospace OEMs for over 12 years. Our solutions significantly improve the industry’s complex processes. They help our customers achieve more by doing less and save time on labour-intensive tasks. We also bring visibility into our customers’ operations to support real-time informed decision making.” (https://www.qoco.aero/)

QOCO Systems Oy is an aviation software house whose customers include airlines, maintenance companies and aircraft engine manufacturers. Growth objectives have created the need and opportunity for project management development.
Heli Kivisoja has been the project leader in the search for a suitable solution. She feels that QOCO Systems’ previous practices for managing customer projects have also been good. However, as the company has grown, the need has arisen for a more structured and standardized portfolio management system to monitor projects and measure their progress more effectively. This would also improve resourcing and future planning.
The options were carefully weighed. Among international and domestic companies, Thinking Portfolio was chosen for a few reasons.
Although Thinking Portfolio has its roots in Finland, support and the entire service is also available in English and a few other languages – this was a necessity for QOCO Systems, which operates around the world.
Heli already had good experiences with the Thinking Portfolio system:
“I dared to recommend that this is a really good system that is easy to implement. I knew from experience that the implementation projects would be smooth and that we would get a lot of support from Thinking Portfolio’s skilled and experienced consultants,” she says, adding that Thinking Portfolio also has a more straightforward, intuitive and streamlined system than many of its competitors.
The implementation was clear and smooth. The project team consisted of four people from QOCO Systems, who were able to influence what was done and learn how to use the system themselves.
“We had a planning meeting, put the workshops on the calendar and got to work,” says Heli.
The system was immediately perceived as flexible and highly customisable.
“Although Thinking Portfolio’s clients range from large corporations to smaller agile players and everything in between, you are able to adapt well to each client’s needs.”
During the implementation phase, Thinking Portfolio’s consultants receive positive feedback for listening to the client’s needs. The most relevant issues were highlighted in the discussions and changes were already made during the workshop.
I was also pleased that the Thinking Portfolio consultants described me what kind of successful solutions have been built for other customers, for example, in connection with report templates.
Since its introduction, the Thinking Portfolio system has been easy to adopt, and even without training, the organisation has been able to get the hang of it.
The tool has made daily work easier. For example, the portfolio has report types built directly into it according to the requirements of QOCO Systems’ customers. As a result, there is no longer any need to maintain different PowerPoints, Excel and Word files, but the reports have been brought directly into the system.
“It’s a great thing,” says Heli.
At QOCO Systems, the portfolio has brought a new level of visibility not only to the future but also to past projects. In fact, the portfolio contains all the historical data from the last ten years.
Heli says that feedback from the management team has been that it’s great to have an overview of what’s happening and has happened in the company.
The introduction of the Project Portfolio has inspired further development, and there are plenty of ideas.
Heli says that she got ideas for development from the annually held Thinking Portfolio User Day, where she was able to hear other customers’ success stories about the development of their portfolios. Next up for QOCO Systems is the introduction of Thinking Portfolio’s Risk Portfolio.

Over 180 Zettabytes of data are projected to be generated by 2025[1], however most of the current infrastructures are not designed to support this amount of data. Additionally, 63% of organizations do not place their mission-critical workloads on public clouds[2] but rather rely on hybrid computing to run their workloads on private clouds and edge servers in order to tackle any potential security risk.
In this context, Atos has developed three new servers to offer extreme flexibility, built-in security and an efficient carbon footprint with titanium power supply. Manufactured in Atos' factory in Angers, these new servers are equipped with the latest, most-performant Computing Technologies from the Group’s strategic technology partners combined with Atos-designed motherboards and eco-efficient packaging. Any workloads and any applications can be run with the lowest latency at the highest efficiency on the hardware. All three servers have built-in security based on Atos Root of Trust & Atos Chain-of-Trust to guarantee the highest level of data security at all times.
As a leader in decarbonization, Atos has designed its servers to have an efficient carbon footprint by largely improving the compute density, therefore allowing better consolidation and consequently lower energy consumption and a smaller footprint.
The BullSequana SH, tailored for high-performance on-premises and public cloud workloads
The Group’s newest server is a digital transformation accelerator enabling customers to run specific workloads requiring large computing capacities, business-critical applications and in-memory applications such as databases and analytics (fully SAP HANA certified appliances and TDI). It is also designed for virtualized and hyperconverged infrastructures, for hybrid computing and for Artificial Intelligence purposes such as deep learning and machine learning.
Based on the 4th Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable processor, the latest addition to the BullSequana S range can scale in a 2-socket increment up to 32 sockets acting as a single server, offering its customers an efficient scalability without over-provisioning and making software use more efficient without increasing energy or footprint.
Customers will also benefit from a faster response time to business demand thanks to the DDR5 memory support for demanding applications and to an increased memory per system with Intel® Optane™ Persistent Memory 300 series.
The new BullSequana EX series, for trusted AI from edge to cloud
Some data sets are simply too large or business-critical to make the move to the cloud. An edge-to-cloud platform offers maximum availability and minimum latency for complex and voluminous data assets. Atos’ new BullSequana EX servers will empower next-generation computer vision use cases such as AI inference for smart glasses, Virtual and Augmented Reality, intelligent management of scene changes and more.
The BullSequana EX range has two designs to address far edge to datacenter workload challenges, both optimized for next-gen AI inference. The BullSequana EXD is based on a far edge desktop with a rackable option, and the BullSequana EXR is an edge datacenter that can also be used for hyperconverged infrastructure for the BullSequana EXR.
With interchangeable CPUs (including 4th Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable processor) and NVIDIA GPUs ranging from the NVIDIA A2 Tensor Core GPU to the NVIDIA L40 GPU, both servers offer unprecedent flexibility. Customers can build and deploy a variety of high performance, latency-sensitive applications (computer vision, VR etc..) as well as run hyperconverged workloads in the edge datacenter with BullSequana EXR.
This offering has been designed to be 5G and connectivity optimized as well as fully adapted for MEC, 5G core and VRAN workloads.
Emmanuel Le Roux, SVP, Group SVP Global Head of Advanced Computing & AI, Atos, commented, “We are excited to today unveil our next generation of enterprise and edge servers; this is a key milestone for Atos’s computing business as our full range of servers is now entirely renewed, together with last year’s BullSequana XH3000 launch. We have leveraged our recognized manufacturing and R&D expertise to develop the next generation of our edge & business computing servers lines to help our clients tackle the challenges of fast-growing data, security and sovereignty."
