Deep technology is technology with the potential to cause a fundamental change in the world. Consider artificial intelligence: we’ve read varying estimations of how many jobs may be lost because of AI and heard about how data about us is being bought and sold for the profit it may yield. AI can even be used to influence elections or predict human behavior with precision beyond human. Deep technologies also hold potential for much good, and the impact is not confined to the borders of individual countries. With deep technologies, global issues like climate change, poverty or famine are one step closer to being solved.
However, at the moment the majority of technologies are being developed by companies – business entities whose primary goal is to create profit, not hack the big problems of the world. “The leading position in the development of artificial intelligence is a race between the United States and China. Europe is the current leader in questions about the ethics of AI. It’s important to understand the global competition, because as the standards are only just taking shape, it is the biggest developers of AI who get to define or ignore the ethical rules that affect the lives of millions of people,” says Mari Männistö, CEO of SHIFT Business Festival.
Developing new, more responsible uses for deep technologies requires new ways of thinking and a new set of skills. “One of the key goals of SHIFT Business Festival is to bring together the right mix of people to discuss the more responsible models and processes of the future,” Männistö continues. To promote learning, the program of SHIFT Business Festival consists of keynotes by leading experts, workshops and roundtable talks designed to offer information about practical solutions that can already be applied to everyday use.
The event will feature speakers such as Joanna Bryson, Associate Professor at the University of Bath, and Catalina Butnary, a leading speaker on global AI ethics. Bryson and Butnary emphasize human responsibility in the development and different uses of technology. We’re responsible for the end-users understanding of technology and the consequences of using it. According to CEO of Sahara Ventures, Jumanne Rajabu Mtabalike, deep technologies can offer access to the core of problems, not just surface solutions. Mtabalike will give a talk with IBM’s Finnish Country General Manager Mirva Antila to showcase how deep technologies can be used to fight poverty in developing markets or to combat climate change.
